Role Summary for Database Administrator (DBA):

This roles requires an individual who will be responsible for establishing database management systems, standards, guidelines, and quality assurance for database deliverables, such as conceptual design, logical database, capacity planning, external data interface specification, data loading plan, data maintenance plan and security policy. This individual will plan computerized databases, including base definition, structure, documentation, long-range requirements, operational guidelines and protection.

The Database Administrator (DBA) would need to ensure accuracy and completeness of data in master files and various support tools, such as database dictionaries. This individual will establish and maintain security and integrity controls along with formulate and monitor policies, procedures, and standards relating to database management. This role would also propose and implement enhancements that will improve the performance and reliability of the system, work on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors, and demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

Primary Responsibilities of the Role:

• Document and communicate database design. Adapt business requirements, developed by modeling/development staff and systems engineers, and develop the data, database specifications, and table and element attributes for an application, including stored/remote procedure calls.
• Code moderately complex to complex programs and derive logical processes on technical platforms. Build windows, screens, and reports. Assist in the design of user interface and business application prototypes. Provide expertise in devising, negotiating, and defending the tables and fields provided in the database. Determine how tables relate to each other and how fields interact within the tables for a relational model.
• Install database management systems and monitor file system space database allocation. Verify efficient use of disk storage; reclaim dead space; optimize space allocation and avoid out-of-space conditions.
• Refresh data from one environment to another at the request of the application development staff, execute necessary tasks to accomplish this, including export, drop, create, and import prescheduled time to minimize impact, provide application development staff optimal development environment with current data.
• Closely monitor performance, identify problems and implement solutions, and ensure database is running at optimum speed and efficiency. Verify implementation of correct backup strategy, develop recovery procedures, and support recovery from loss of data caused by user or system error.
• Configure and maintain database servers and processes, including monitoring of system health and performance, to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security.
• Remain self-motivated, show initiative (i.e. be proactive), and focus on solutions (i.e. problem solving methodology).
• Keep up to date with the knowledge required to hold this position.

Qualifications and Experience/Skills Required for the Role:

• At least 2+ years of experience with databases (i.e. MySQL & SQL Server).
• Ability to write scripts to automate administrative functions and be able to work with application developers on database design.
• Proficient in the coding of SQL, database stored procedures, and appropriate testing methods.
• Ability to design and create database schema scripts, deploy schema build scripts, maintain database baselines, support application requirements, testing and implementations.
• Strong skill set in SQL, PL/SQL development along with the ability to analyze and provide recommendation for performance tuning.
• Ability to analyze and resolve or recommend solutions to highly complex technical problems such as performance issues, integration of object-oriented relational database technology, and data quality issues.
• Ability to maintain database - database administration includes, installation, patching, replication, capacity planning, monitoring, backups, performance tuning, query optimization, and security.
